Heading to Lake Powell with Your Crew

Lake Powell is a huge, beautiful lake in the desert on the border of Utah and Arizona. It’s a fantastic spot for families to have a blast! Imagine clear blue water, red rock cliffs, and lots of sunshine.

Making the Most of Your Lake Powell Visit

To have the best time at Lake Powell, a little planning goes a long way. Here are some tips to make your family trip smooth and fun.

Timing Your Trip

The best time to visit Lake Powell for warm weather and swimming is usually from late spring (May) through early fall (September). Summer can be very hot, so if you have young kids, consider visiting in May, June, or September. The water is still warm enough to swim, and the temperatures are more comfortable for exploring.

Where to Stay

There are several options for families. You can rent a house or condo in nearby towns like Page, Arizona, or Kanab, Utah. For a real lake experience, consider staying on a houseboat! Many families rent them and have their own floating home for a few days, which is an unforgettable adventure. There are also campgrounds and lodges within the park if you prefer.

Fun Activities for Everyone

Lake Powell offers endless fun.

Boating and Water Sports

Renting a boat is a popular choice. You can cruise around, find secluded coves for swimming and picnicking, or try water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. Even if you don’t rent a big boat, you can enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, and jet skiing.

Exploring the Canyons

Take a guided boat tour to see the stunning slot canyons, like Antelope Canyon (which requires a guided tour with a Navajo guide). You can also hike to scenic viewpoints or explore by Jeep tours.

Stargazing

The desert sky at Lake Powell is incredible! Far from city lights, you’ll see more stars than you can imagine. Bring a blanket and enjoy a night of celestial wonder.

Gearing Up for Outdoor Adventures

Having the right gear can make all the difference when you’re out exploring. Whether you’re heading to the lake, the mountains, or just a local park, here’s a look at some helpful equipment.

Essential Outdoor Gear

Think about the kind of trip you’re planning. This will help you decide what you absolutely need.

For Water Fun (Like Lake Powell)

• Sun Protection: This is crucial! Bring plenty of sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and rash guards for extra sun protection when swimming or on the water.
• Life Jackets: Essential for everyone, especially children, when boating or participating in water sports. Most rental places will provide these, but it’s good to check.
• Water Shoes: Protect your feet from hot sand, rocks, and slippery surfaces.
• Towels: Quick-drying towels are great for the beach or boat.
• Waterproof Bags: Keep your phones, wallets, and other essentials dry.
• Cooler: To keep drinks and snacks cold on the boat or at the beach.

For Hiking and Exploring

• Comfortable Shoes: Sturdy walking or hiking shoes are a must.
• Backpack: A small backpack to carry water, snacks, and essentials.
• Water Bottles: Staying hydrated is super important, especially in warm weather.
• First-Aid Kit: For any minor scrapes or cuts.
• Navigation Tools: A map and compass, or a reliable GPS device or app on your phone if you’re going on longer hikes.

General Camping and Outdoor Gear

• Tent: If you plan to camp.
• Sleeping Bags and Pads: For comfortable sleeping.
• Camp Stove and Fuel: For cooking meals outdoors.
• Headlamps or Flashlights: Essential for navigating after dark.
• Insect Repellent: To keep bugs away.
