Conquer the Backcountry: Snowcat Skiing in Steamboat, Colorado

Imagine this: you’re whisked away by a powerful snowcat vehicle to untouched powder fields high in the mountains. That’s the magic of snowcat skiing in Steamboat, Colorado! Unlike regular skiing or snowboarding where you ride a lift, a snowcat takes you to places most skiers can only dream of. This means fresh, deep snow without the crowds.

What is Snowcat Skiing?

A snowcat is a big, tracked vehicle that can drive on snow. It has a cozy cabin inside where you and your group ride up the mountain. At the top, you hop out and ski or snowboard down amazing, untouched slopes. It’s like having your own private ski mountain for the day!

Why Steamboat for Snowcat Skiing?

Steamboat is famous for its “Champagne Powder®” snow, which is super light and fluffy. The mountains there have tons of open bowls and steep runs perfect for exploring. Snowcat operations in Steamboat offer guided tours, so you’ll always be safe and find the best snow.

What to Expect in a Package

Most snowcat skiing packages include the ride up in the snowcat, a day of guided skiing or snowboarding, and sometimes lunch. You’ll need to be an intermediate to advanced skier or rider because the terrain can be challenging. It’s an unforgettable experience for anyone who loves powder and adventure!

Reel ‘Em In: Essential Fishing Gear and Techniques

Fishing is a fantastic way to relax and connect with nature. Whether you’re casting a line in a clear mountain stream or a wide-open lake, having the right gear and knowing some basic techniques can make all the difference between a peaceful day and a frustrating one.

Must-Have Fishing Gear

• Fishing Rod and Reel: Choose a rod and reel combo that fits the type of fishing you plan to do. For beginners, a spinning rod and reel is usually easiest to learn.
• Fishing Line: Monofilament line is a good all-around choice. Make sure it’s strong enough for the fish you expect to catch.
• Hooks: You’ll need various sizes of hooks. Smaller hooks are for smaller bait and fish, while larger hooks are for bigger fish and baits.
• Bait and Lures: Live bait like worms or minnows can be very effective. Lures are artificial baits that mimic the look and movement of prey.
• Bobbers (Floats): These help you see when a fish is biting and keep your bait at a certain depth.
• Sinkers (Weights): These help your bait or lure sink to the desired depth.
• Fishing License: Don’t forget this! You need a license to fish legally in most places.

Basic Fishing Techniques

Casting:

This is how you get your bait or lure into the water. For spinning reels, open the bail, hold the line against the rod with your finger, swing the rod back, and then forward, releasing the line as the rod tip comes forward. Practice makes perfect!

Setting the Hook:

When you feel a tug on your line, you need to “set the hook” by quickly pulling the rod tip upward. This drives the hook into the fish’s mouth.

Reeling In:

Once the hook is set, reel steadily to bring the fish towards you. Keep your rod tip up to maintain tension on the line.

Catch and Release:

If you’re not keeping the fish for food, it’s important to release it gently back into the water. Handle the fish as little as possible and try to wet your hands before touching it to protect its slime coat.

Peace of Mind on the Go: Travel Insurance for Military Families

Military families often have unique travel needs and benefits, but protecting your vacation investment is still super important. Travel insurance can save you a lot of money and stress if something unexpected happens before or during your trip.

Why Military Families Need Travel Insurance

Life in the military can be unpredictable. Deployments, PCS (Permanent Change of Station) orders, and sudden training exercises can sometimes force you to cancel or cut short a planned vacation. Travel insurance can help you get back the money you spent on non-refundable travel expenses like flights, hotels, and tours.

What to Look For in a Policy

Trip Cancellation:

This covers you if you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason, like a sudden military order or a family emergency. Make sure the policy lists specific reasons for cancellation that apply to you.

Trip Interruption:

This helps if your trip is cut short while you’re already traveling. It can cover the cost of getting you home and the unused portion of your trip.

Emergency Medical and Evacuation:

While TRICARE covers medical needs, travel insurance can offer extra peace of mind, especially if you’re traveling internationally. It can cover emergency medical treatment and, importantly, medical evacuation if you need to be moved to a better-equipped facility or back home for treatment.

Baggage Loss or Delay:

If your luggage is lost or significantly delayed, this benefit can help you replace essential items.

Understanding Military-Specific Coverage:

Some insurance companies offer policies tailored for military families. They might have specific clauses or benefits related to military orders. Always read the policy details carefully, especially the “exclusions” section, to know what isn’t covered.
